Ophir Project
Geologic Setting
The
Ophir Project is a 640 ha exploration tenement wholly owned by Ophir
Gold Ltd, and is located in the heart of Central Otago reef gold
country, two hours drive northwest of Dunedin. Numerous highly prospective
mineralised reefs, as well as near-surface gold bearing gravels,
contribute to the excellent potential of the project area. The tenement
is situated 70 km North West from the world-class Macraes Gold Deposit,
which has produced around 2M oz (62 ton) of bullion gold since 1990.
The Ophir Project is located in the centre of a highly prospective
belt of high grade Otago Schist rocks, which hosts significant reef
gold occurrences in the Province.
The Ophir Gold Project was historically mined during the "gold-rush"
days in Otago, producing an estimated 1,200 oz from 13,000 tonnes
of ore. Problems with processing the ore led to much of the gold
being left untouched. Numerous highly prospective mineralised reefs,
as well as near-surface gold bearing gravels, contribute to the
excellent potential of the tenement. Today, advances in exploration,
ore processing and extraction techniques, along with strong primary
metallurgic prices worldwide, have made the Ophir Gold Project a
very attractive exploration target.
Prospect Areas
Ophir Gold has completed initial exploration which has involved
expenditure of more than NZ$ 500,000 and has successfully identified
a total strike length of more than 4 km of regionally significant
gold mineralised structures across the tenement, comprising 9 auriferous
prospect areas. These prospect areas represent highly attractive
targets, with established prospectivity indicated by strong assay
results from sampling and significant intersections from preliminary
drilling. Gold mineralisation in all prospect areas remains open
both along strike and with depth.

Wai-iti Prospect
The Wai-iti Prospect is the first of the Ophir project areas to
be drilled. Results have been highly encouraging with significant
gold intersected in multiple holes. Further drilling is planned
at Wai-iti to further expand the known gold resource.
